Researchers still need to publish, still need handouts, and still need to present their findings at conferences. For that reason I find static graphs and presentation materials are just as important as web based interactive graphics. I have primarily done work on creating easier ways to make these graphics with ggplot in R but also incorporate d3 and Adobe products.
